Background:  Fernando Acosta is the eldest of the 3 Argentine born Acosta brothers. He was a smart and physical sweeper that made the Sporting defense impenetrable every time he was on the pitch. He joined the team in 2003. However due to constant injuries, he officially left the club at the end of the 2009-2010 season with only 5 appearances. His best performance was in the summer of 2006 when he brought Sporting to the final of the Overnight Red Bulls Tournament at Giants Stadium. He scored a goal in the last game of group play to get Sporting level after being down 2-0. The draw was all they needed to qualify for the tournament playoffs.
